Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Some would refer to the students in our class as high poverty, but that doesn’t stop any of these students from loving school. We are a very diverse school where numerous languages are spoken. Just like a tossed salad, every student brings something magical to the school.
The differences in each child makes each student unique.
These differences could be cultural, reading ability, religion, or athletic ability. When we are in the classroom, we put those aside and work as a learning group. They work through all of our curriculum so that they can master the English language. This book allows us to do just that while also learning about the history of America.
My Project
Part of being a Title I school means that our students don’t have access to the great novels that are available to most. With this great novel, they not only learn about different dialects, they get a glimpse into the Great Depression.
Diversity, immigration, and World War 1 are all parts of this classic novel.
As each student reads through this novel, they will learn not only the historical part of life, they also find how figurative language adds to the story. We will read it as a class read-aloud so that they are engaged while hearing new vocabulary words. As we work through the characters, settings, and point-of-view, they will see how well this book is written. All of this will help them read fluently and this will help them expand their own vocabulary of historical events.
