I am a first grade teacher in Holly Springs, NC. I teach all academic subjects within a large school district. Although the district is large, we are one of only two elementary schools in the area and growing fast! I currently have 16 students, with a prospective class of 18 to 20 for next year. Mathematics is one of the many areas of curriculum I teach, and extremely important to the growth of my students. In teaching Math, one of the major objectives we have is using the calendar. This is an important skill for young first graders to have. So important that we have a special "calendar time" every day. Using a calendar within my classroom allows my students experience with so much more than days of the week and months of the year. With the proper calendar set-up, the students would be able to interactively study estimation, problem solving, patterns, place value, counting, number sense/recognition and calendar concepts. As I plan for instruction within my classroom, providing a meaningful learning environment is at the top of my list. My students represent all developmental levels; however, the one thing they have in common is hands-on learning. This allows my students to take ownership of their learning. In order for this to happen during calendar time, the students would need a calendar that is inviting, instructional and interactive. Lakeshore Learning Materials has created such a calendar. It is a comprehensive program that allows for different math skills to be introduced each day at calendar time. The calendar includes over 225 cards, an estimation jar, counting sticks and more!
