Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are between the ages of four and five. They are just starting their school experience and they all have a great love of learning.
This age group requires small group instruction, creative play, visuals, and manipulatives.
Many of these students come to school without the basic foundational skills needed to succeed, not only academically, but socially and emotionally as well.
Every student learns through different modalities and it is important to provide a rich environment that is a component of the curriculum.
My Project
Often elementary schools have tables and chairs that are a one-size-fits-all across the grades. The tables are large, bulky, and the chairs are not the appropriate size for this age group. I teach in a transitional kindergarten classroom and my goal is to create a classroom similar to one you would find in a Montessori school.
Montessori classrooms are designed to be intuitive and conducive to a child’s needs at multiple developmental stages.
The entire design of a Montessori classroom is intended to encourage learning at a child’s own pace. The sensory and practical areas of the classroom help students develop different skills, such as perception and motor skills.
These tables are the perfect size for small center instruction and independent activities. These tables will also provide access to specific developmental and academic needs as seen in a Montessori classroom.
