Montessori Hodgepodge

My Students

Our school is a public Montessori school and we are blessed to teach by the Montessori pedagogy. My classroom is full of children ages 3-6 who are eager to arrive and learn, socialize and grow. Each morning I greet the children individually. But before I do, I flip off the fluorescent lighting and allow daylight to stream in, and complement that with incandescent paper globes. The uncluttered space sets the stage for activity that is focused and calm. Learning materials are displayed on accessible shelves, fostering independence as the children go about their work. Everything is where it is supposed to be, conveying a sense of harmony and order that both comforts and inspires.

In this safe and empowering environment, our youngest scholars find joy not only in learning, but helping, too.

Our Montessori classroom radiates harmony and respect, and the students work together as stewards of their environment. They take turns caring for classroom pets and plants; do their part to maintain order, such as by returning materials to the shelves after use; and help keep the tables clean and pencils sharpened.

My Project

Students benefit from an organized teacher who can fix broken things, and who can create useful and wonderful materials.

"It begins with a knowledge of his surrounding" -Maria Montessori.

Some of our classroom "office supplies" are breaking (like, our staplers) and there are some additional supplies that we need (like, allen wrenches for fixing broken things; and pony beads and pipe cleaners for pincer grip development). Pencils, pens, and staplers are always in high demand and it's helpful when they are located in several locations around the room; and sculpey is used to create small discs to keep pencils from rolling off their trays.

The most exciting item on this list are the materials to stain the Continent Boxes. The food coloring mixed with a bit of minwax will create gorgeous colored stains that will match the colors on the Continent Map (so so excited about this!!).
