This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have the pleasure of teaching 30+ joyful and curious learners from ages 3-6 at one of the 7 public, Montessori Schools in Milwaukee. The academic needs of the children are diverse and require a variety of resources.
The vast difference in development between the ages of 3 and 6 requires a wide variety of materials.
Montessori education supports learning through the development of the hand and manipulation of concrete materials. Materials are used often and lost or damaged by young inexperienced hands. It is challenging and expensive to replace these items continuously. The children love to use new materials and have new experiences. These materials will help engage and support my students as they progress towards becoming ever more confident and capable.
My Project
The materials I am requesting will help engage my youngest students in exploring and manipulating materials that require exercising the precision and strength of their hands. This is the first step towards giving them the strength to write! Last year many of my older students were drawn to building. I only had a small set of blocks and a marble maze, but they loved to use their imagination and problem solving skills to create structures. Additional items on this list will give them greater opportunities to explore and engineer new creations. Lastly, I included phonemic hands-on materials to further assist my older students’ knowledge of letter/sound correspondence.
