Our school is in a large metropolis with many of the same challenges facing other cities this size. As teachers, we're sensitive to the fact that many of our students struggle to get their basic needs met. All students at our school receive free breakfast and lunch. Each year our school has more students who are homeless. Most of our students come to school carrying the heavy load of some kind of significant trauma.
Our class is a self-contained, special education behavior unit.
We have great kids! We just need a little extra help. Our classroom is a safe environment designed to help us focus and learn.
Once a student becomes comfortable with numbers and their values, it's time to take them to the next level! This project is all about Montessori addition. The Addition Snake Game introduces the child to addition combinations of the unit numbers. Using the Addition Strip Board, the child practices the sequence of addition combinations 1–9, and begins the process of memorization of the addition tables. The Addition Tables contain the equations necessary for performing the Addition Strip Board exercises. The Dot Exercise and Dot Exercise Sheets provide practice in decimal system addition. Through use, the child further explores column addition and experiences the mechanism of ‘carrying’. The Addition Working Charts (along with the 4 sets of color-coded unit addition combinations slips. 1 set of combinations for each of the 4 Addition Working Charts) aid the child in the practice and memorization of the unit addition combinations. The Addition Equations and Sums Box is a 2-compartment box with lid that contains plastic chips, 1 set with equations printed on them and 1 set with the answers that is used with the Addition Working Charts. The Addition Tables Booklets 1, 2 and 3 are the ‘traditional’ addition tables for the numbers 1–9 with second addend in numerical order. The Small Bead Frame forms the bridge to abstraction for the decimal system exercises of addition and subtraction. The Small Bead Frame Activity Set offers Additional exercises for use with the Small Bead Frame. Finally, the Small Bead Frame paper is Specially designed color-coded, lined paper for use with the Small Bead Frame.
