“An education capable of saving humanity is no small undertaking; it involves the spiritual development of man, the enhancement of his value as an individual, and the preparation of young people to understand the times in which they live.” Dr. Maria Montessori, 1937.
Our school is a Title I Montessori school in the inner-city of Indianapolis with a diverse population of learners.
I have the privilege of working with 22 magnificent 1st and 2nd graders in a Montessori classroom. My students are inner-city, high-poverty children who are embarking on their journey as Montessori learners in Indianapolis Public Schools. Students bring their rich cultural backgrounds to school, as well as a variety of languages to share the wealth of knowledge they already attain. I share in the joys of growing their expertise in the many fields of mathematics, language arts, cultural studies,
At school, I work to ensure that my students' educational needs are met, but I can't do it without the help of the community supporting our next leaders, innovators, and thinkers. Montessori's philosophy is that children learn best through their innate drive to learn new things, and we provide this with hands-on materials and the cosmic approach.
My Project
We are lucky to be learning the Montessori way, but we are working on building our depth of materials. Currently, we are borrowing, creating, or going without some very vital pieces. I am asking for help to provide my students with new materials from Montessori 123. This company creates wonderful Montessori works, and they will last a long time for our students and future learners to use as well.
“The environment must be rich in motives which lend interest to activity and invite the child to conduct his own experiences." Montessori.
The materials provided will assist students in learning about time zones, artist studies, punctuation, days and months, language, and sequencing.
