Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I work in East Palo Alto, California, teaching third grade. Close to 90% of our mostly Hispanic and African-American student population qualifies for the free and reduced price lunch program. One of my students' great joys in school is going on field trips. The majority of our families face economic challenges on a daily basis. Going to museums, musicals, and the zoo are expenses they usually can't afford. This is why I feel it is essential that I can provide opportunities for my students to see life outside of our classroom walls. I want them to experience the things they learn about in school. Habitats is one of the most popular third grade science units. Kids love learning about rain forests, deserts, the arctic, grasslands, and the ocean. I would be thrilled if I could take my students on a journey to one of the habitats, the ocean, by visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is truly a magical place for children. I want to see their eyes light up when they see in person a sea creature that they've read about. I have already secured tickets for the field trip for my class and the other five 3rd grade classrooms (120 students in all). We have June 9th reserved but we need help in paying for three buses to get us there! We have been fundraising all year but are still short. We are asking for the funds to pay the balance needed on the transportation costs. My students and I appreciate your help!
