Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Teach for America corps member who teaches English at Markham Middle School in Watts, CA (South Central Los Angeles area). The school is located in LAUSD District 7. Approximately 70% of the students are Latino/a, and 30% are African American.
In this proposal, I request a class set, 35 paperback copies, of "Monster" by Walter Dean Myers. Each class that I teach has approximately 35 students.
I want to teach "Monster" to my eighth graders next year because I have seen the joy my students feel at finishing an entire novel. This year, I taught "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton to my students. When we finished reading the novel, one student looked up at me with pride and commented that "The Outsiders" was the first novel that she had finished. Also, in the end-of-year surveys that my classes took, many students indicated that they loved reading novels (they did not like studying short stories in the textbook). Since I am teaching the same students next year (due to looping), I would like to do whatever I can to engage them in the material.
I specifically want to teach "Monster" because like "The Outsiders," "Monster" is a story that my students can relate to. Gangs, drugs, and violence are a reality in my students' lives. Many children have family members in prison. Some students are on probation and must attend boot camp for committing crimes. I strongly believe that my students will be able to relate to the main character's experience in "Monsters." As a result, they will be more invested in the novel.
