My students need real world experiences to train and motivate them for their future. Running a business from start up to sales, product manufacturing, packaging, delivery, and customer service, I plan give them that.
My students start each day happy to be at school. They love school and tell me they do not like holidays when they have to miss school. Our school is located in an affluent county in FL, however, our class makeup doesn't look anything like that.
As a special needs class, grades 3-5, with some behaviorally challenged students, every day can be an adventure for all of us.
We never know how our day is going to go, but we set daily and weekly goals for ourselves, and celebrate even the simplest successes.
My Project
Students at my school earn Sailfish Bucks for earned rewards. This year I used my personal Cricut, a wireless internet computer based machine that cuts vinyl, to make custom clipboards, water bottles, and decals for my students to spend their reward bucks on. After two of them earned it, I brought my Cricut in to class and they picked out the font and vinyl to customize it. Their peers in the general education classes were amazed and wanted it too.
An idea was born!
My students started asking if they could have a class Cricut and make them to sell. They started having conversations about profits and costs, what a fair price to sell them was, etc. They asked if they could have a store, and I told them that if it were possible, I would help them. They are working on a business plan using Florida Standards in economics, writing, reading, and math. I agreed to purchase the items to be personalized from local vendors as needed.
From designing order forms and sales experience, product management, cost analysis, packaging and delivery, and customer service, this would be hands on learning from in a start up business in a meaningful way. With the principal's blessing and some help from donors, the life lessons these students will learn, they will never forget!
