Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from high poverty, low socioeconomic backgrounds. Many of them live in low-income apartments. One hundred percent of them qualify for government assistance and the federal free lunch program. Many of them are ELL learners and speak English as a second language. However, these barriers do not discourage their love for learning!
These students come to school every day excited and ready to improve their reading and writing.
Their parents are very concerned about their children's education to provide them a better life. Although they are disadvantaged in so many ways, you would never know it by their positive attitudes and eagerness to learn.
My Project
Our school is in a very high poverty area. So one of our biggest challenges is teaching money to our youngest students. Many of them are not familiar with coins or bills, so they don't know their value.
We live in a day of vouchers and credit cards, so many of these students have never even touched money.
These pretend coins will help teach our students to recognize coins and bills and teach them how to add and subtract them. Coins can also be used to teach the foundation of fractions using quarters and dimes. The miniature cash registers will allow them for creative play using a calculator and coins and bills as they run their pretend stores or restaurants.
Money is a concept these children will be using for a lifetime. Please give us a chance to introduce it to them in the classroom. Thank you for your interest in my project.
