This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach a Math 171 and Math 172 course to juniors and seniors. All plan to go to college. However, our socioeconomically disadvantaged first generation minority students know little about finances in preparation for college and life. Let’s change that.
My Project
My students are poor and urban. Their families rarely talk to them about financial decisions. Our families often rent, pay higher interest and money that is tight already gets wasted. I want my students to understand how they can change their family's future by getting educated, building credit and making good financial decisions. I have done this project using Money Letters 2 My Daughter in the past and I am seeing the difference that a little knowledge can make. Money Letters 2 My Daughter is a book that speaks to high school and college students at their level of knowledge. Former students are getting student credit cards and building credit. They have credit union accounts to get better interest on cars. They are aware of predatory practices and many have started Roth and 401k accounts to plan for their future.
