My students are energetic, thoughtful and excited when able to join their peers in typical daily activities! They absolutely love station work and hands on activities.Truly, they are my inspiration and the reason I want to provide real world practices to help them be successful!
Many students in my classroom come in saying "I hate math" and frustrated with the rigor I am challenged to present.
I'm in need of specialized curriculum and resources to show them they too can enjoy math. Our school is nestled in rural southeast Georgia, which once was surrounded by cotton and peanut fields. Majority of our students come to us from rural areas spread out among three smaller cities. We have many demographics represented within our country school.
Each child in my classroom is eager to overcome their cognitive challenges; although the method, delivery and environment in which they learn best vary greatly. We incorporate a variety of learning strategies, station work, and alternative seating to ensure that each student's needs are met! They truly are incredible students which I am blessed to have a small part of their journey to adulthood.
My Project
All students want to know how to pay for their lunches, go shopping with their friends, buy a soda from a machine or make a purchase at the gas station. This project will allow me the necessary resources to not only teach/practice money skills but also help to build the self-esteem needed to participate in society. Being 6th graders with cognitive disabilities they already face many obstacles in trying to complete state math standards. During station time, my students are able to practice skills they need and can experience success in the real world. All of my students are passionate about learning how to count money.
The "Money Matters" station resources will allow my students to learn and practice real life money skills in a fun way.
I believe we can all agree that the most important math skill every student needs is the ability to use their money effectively. My students need extra practice and a fun way to master these skills. Providing these resources to our weekly stations will not only allow for money skills practice but empower my students to participate with their peers in society.
