The students in my classroom range from the team cheerleaders to struggling with self-esteem.
They all have a great attitude about learning but, really connect with hands on applications. The school we are in, is a leadership driven school. The students strive to receive the responsibility of a leader. I know that they will do wonders in understanding money with the hands on activities. They push to understand the things that they do not and always want to help others achieve along with them. They are great about never leaving anyone behind and always lending a helping hand. Some students struggle to understand simple math concepts and really need another approach to their learning. Hands on is the way to go! The students love it and take care of the things we have. They are very appreciative for the things they are given. We just finished up a drive to gather their own toys to donate to the children in Haiti. These children sent five huge boxes. They love to do for others!
My Project
I have requested many hands on activities for learning money. My students make the most achievement in learning when it is real world connected. The rubber stamps will have the children make the connection between what they are using and counting, constantly requiring coin recognition. The money puzzles cover so many of our state standards in one game that the students can work in pairs, have fun and feel successful in understanding money. The many different games that I have chosen as resources are really the concrete to learning. Students love to play games all the time and these different games with bring learning without the paper and pencil. My students love to act out real life situations and the cash register is going to give them the chance to really take off with understanding more than just money. Students will begin exploring producer and consumer ideas, counting back change, addition and subtraction strategies all through money and the resources that are given.
In first grade our state standards cover recognition and beginning trading.
Having these resources will better prepare our students for not only the next grade but, for life. Many register workers and consumers need technology to help make change or count for them. We need to install in our future generation to rely on their own knowledge and ability so if the technology is gone, they are still able to compute. With these resources my students will understand how money impacts our world daily.
