I want to create a safe, engaging and educational environment where the students in my classroom want to come and learn. I teach children with special needs in grades K-5 on a Native American Indian Reservation. 100% of the student population receives free breakfast and lunch. They live in extreme poverty, often coming to school without their basic needs being met, such as wearing warm clothes, being fed, or getting a good night's rest. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day.
My Project
Games make learning fun. Having games such as Life, Monopoly, and Payday available will be an amazing asset to my functional math program.
Many of my older students are still struggling with money concepts, and games, such as Payday and Life, can help make learning more exciting and realistic.
The calculators will be used to help keep the games flowing faster. The money dice will be available for the students to use their imaginations and make up their own games.
My younger students will be able to play the Monopoly Jr. and Game of Life Jr. games. They will learn about counting and using money. The older students would be able to help them play (strengthening their own skills in the process.) The containers will be used to store the games neatly and help keep them nice for years of gameplay.
While playing the games, they will also learn other valuable lessons, such as taking turns, playing by the rules, communicating with each other and good sportsmanship. I'm so excited about this project and I can't wait to get the supplies for my students to use. Thank you in advance for your support.
