Imagine moving to a new country. You walk into a classroom and you may not have ever had any formal education before. You have never read or written and you have this smiling teacher talking to you in a language you don't understand. These are the students I teach everyday.
I teach students ESL from varied backgrounds and countries of origin.
Many of my students have very limited schooling in their own language and are now thrust into a formal school setting. I help students learn English while holding on and becoming literate in their own language as well. While they take care of their families and learn a new language, their health is many times the last thing on their minds. My students have come from all around the world, from many different and often difficult situations. They hold the American Dream, but need the tools to make them successful.
My Project
I have been using the Next Gen Personal Finance lesson plans with my classes this semester. They awarded me and all teachers who tried their curriculum, one hundred dollars toward a Donors Choose project. I cannot think of a better way to spend that award then to purchase the Financial Peace Course for my students.
I took a Dave Ramsey course two years ago and it brought me out of the debt that I had dug myself into in college.
I believe in this envelope system. I want to help my students to take what little money that they make and learn to save a bit each pay. This will hopefully get them out of the paycheck to paycheck lifestyle at a young age.
It is so great to see my students interact with each other over this topic. I really see my students connect with the functional, financial concepts that we have been focusing on this semester. I loved seeing the real-life situation click with them. Overall, this is a great way to expose my ESL students to functional literacy skills that will be crucial for them after graduation. Many of my ESL students have children. I am hoping to instill in them through Financial Peace Jr. that it is never too early to teach their children how to be financially literate.
