Help me give my students 13 different money math games, a set of paper bills, a magnetic money set, and a Checkbook Charlie workbook so they can build their financial literacy skills.
The group of high school students that I teach are curious and hands on learners. My students are also primarily Hmong American. Our town has a high population of Hmong families, and my school serves many of them. Typically, these families live below the poverty line.
Many of them are English language learners and struggle with fluency and comprehension of English texts.
However, they never make excuses and always try their best. They face hardships as non-native Americans in this country, but continue to consistently work hard, with a positive attitude.
My Project
Every Friday is Financial Friday in my classroom. During Financial Fridays students work on improving their financial literacy skills through a variety of activities such as real-world scenarios, games, and workbook pages. My students enjoy playing the financial literacy games the most. However, after repeatedly using the few financial literacy games I have with my students throughout the year, I would like to expand the collection I have by adding on the following games: Nasco Financial Literacy Game Set (9 different financial literacy games), Money Bags, The Grocery Store, Budget Town, and Managing My Allowance. These new games will expand on the financial literacy content I can cover while providing a new way of seeing the content for my students.
By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase the student’s financial literacy skills, but you will also ultimately help them prepare for real-world financial situations.
Students will be able to use the Complete Set of 500 Paper Bills and Actual Size Magnetic Coins and Bills as they practice making change and identifying coins and bills. The Checkbook Charlie workbook will allow the students to learn about why having a checkbook and checkbook registry is important while reviewing the rules of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals.
My students do not always have the opportunities to see or practice using money at home, especially when their parents may be using a digital money format. These supplies will help provide that exposure they so desperately need, as well as continuing to get them excited about Financial Fridays.
