Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a first grade teacher. I teach twenty enthusiastic learners. My students strive to succeed despite their backgrounds. Some of my students have foster parents, while some students receive special education services. All of my students come from a high poverty neighborhood. Despite the odds against my students, they try hard and work hard to be successful in first grade.

My students are struggling with basic money skills. We exchange coins every morning and yet my students are having difficulty with this basic concept. Parents tell me their child needs more work and support in counting money. My class needs "Money 101!"

My students would definitely benefit from additional resources in money. My students respond well to read-alouds and that is why I am requesting money read-aloud books. I believe my students would value the importance of money if they knew the history of money, as well as counting and exchanging money. The resource books would allow parents to work at home with their child.

Your help will help my first graders be successful in life. Counting and exchanging money is a math skill that everyone needs to know. My students would benefit for years from the exposure in first grade to quality literature on money, and reinforcing their learning by working with money. Please help me help my first graders and families develop their money counting skills.
