Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our 5th graders are hands down the best group of we students we have ever had! They are focused, attentive, and are team players. They love to support and help each other, and work together to achieve their goals. Our classes have goals set for reading and math, and our students love celebrating when they meet them these goals. They are aware of the world around them, and love to discuss current events.
As the leaders of our school, they do a great job of holding each other accountable, making sure that everyone is being kind and supportive, and are role-models to the younger grades.
An example is whenever our students find the bathrooms messy they alert our front office so that it can be cleaned. If they hear someone using inappropriate or unkind language, they work together to fix the issue.
Our students are clever and funny, and make us laugh every single day. For example, while watching a science video on how hawks eat pigeons, one of our students yelled out “Cannibalism!”
My Project
East Oakland isn't the safest communities, and many students don't get the experience to go outside their community. Many will be visiting a college campus for the first time, and will have the opportunity to speak with college students and learn more through workshops about how to get into high education.
Many of our students will be the first in their family to go to college, and to this day, I know the impact it made for me as a first generation college student.
I just want my kids to have the chance to see what else is out there.
