Help me give my students the chance to make a positive difference in the world. They will engage themselves in critical citizen science on a critical species that needs all the help it can get.
My students are amazing kids that come from all different walks of life. My school is Title 1 and although they don't always come from the best areas they all want to make a positive difference in the world. As a science teacher, these kids are intrigued and invested in deep inquiries in the scientific world.
These students have all the talent in the world yet they don't have access to the technology and resources to propel to where they deserve to be.
There is no question that they all have a passion for the sciences and pushing their education further everyday. The lessons and studies we do lead them to brighter future which will have a great impact on themselves, their communities and even the environment.
My Project
Students will get the opportunity to get outside and into the field to perform real science. They will learn real techniques for biological field sampling that scientists currently use to perform such studies all across the world. The students will be engaged in catching monarch butterflies and learning how to tag them. This will not only contribute to the conservation of the species but we will be able to use the data of the monarchs caught and manipulate it for different studies. Students will get hands on experience in different conservation based field studies that will translate into their future careers, community endeavors, and understanding of the natural world.
Students will also have the chance to see raise and observe caterpillars metamorphize in monarch butterflies, tag and release them.
