Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. My students face many challenges and I am looking to provide the most meaningful learning experiences during the time I have with them each day.
My students have so much energy and are very adaptable to their surroundings.
Many of them are being raised in single parent households or by grandparents and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. It is common for my students to move at least once each school year and lack some stability in their homes. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". While they are in my classroom I focus on their potential and growth as much as possible. I can not control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience while they are with me. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire my students to stay off the streets and continue on a path of academic achievement.
My Project
Students come to my class with little to no chemistry background but need to understand the relevance of chemical structures to the function of the molecules of life. Most students just have a vague understanding of a few elements so models are very important to bring these molecules to life in biology.
Molecular model kits will allow students to build simple molecules like water and carbon dioxide but then work up to more complex structures like amino acids and simple carbohydrates.
These molecules will be referenced throughout the year and understanding the basic chemical structures will establish a much stronger foundation to build upon.
