Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are shrewd, savvy, brave, and resilient. They attend a Title I school and live in one of the roughest neighborhoods in New York City. Despite these challenges, they are eager to learn when provided with the opportunity and resources. Our school offers a safe space for them to grow and flourish. We have an exceptionally strong social support system, with counselors working with small groups of students on an ongoing basis from grades six to twelve to ensure they graduate from high school and enroll in college.
When my students enter the classroom and see an experiment set up, they are excited and curious and want to start exploring right away.
Most of my students come from homes where academic enrichment opportunities outside of school are limited. My students truly appreciate any of the extras we can bring into the classroom. My goal is to create an exciting, positive, learning environment for my students to explore the world around them.
My Project
Science allows students to explore their world and discover new things. Children are naturally curious, so science should be a favorite subject. That's why I was shocked to discover that a majority of my students enter middle school disliking science. For many, their elementary school science experience consisted largely of memorizing facts and filling in worksheets.
Science should be a fun and active subject, involving a variety of hands-on labs and experiments.
My students love to conduct scientific experiments and make their own discoveries. In the coming school year, I would like to incorporate more project-based learning activities for my students. We will use the Molecular Gastronomy Kit to explore kitchen chemistry and perform various experiments with agar, sodium alginate, calcium chloride, calcium lactate, and soy lecithin to create edible water bubbles, raindrop cakes, soft caviar pearls of balsamic vinegar by gelification, and lemon foam made through emulsification. The Wancle Thermal Immersion Circulator will be used to heat containers of water quickly and efficiently. We will use the immersion blender to mix the sodium alginate into the water because stirring with a spoon is not sufficient for successful spherification. We will also add acids and enzymes to milk to see how cheese is made. My students will work in groups of 2-3. Each group will use their own scale to measure out the appropriate amounts of each ingredient in a challenge to create an innovative selection of dishes that will stimulate curiosity, entice the eyes, and tickle the palate.
