My students need composition books and pens for our daily journal entries. Each day, I allow time for my students to write about their day or events going on in their life.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students often have high referral rates, live in single-parent households, with grandparents or multiple-family households. I also deal with students who have anger issues. The majority of them also have behavior issues causing them to have a high rate of disciplinary referrals. Most do not have positive male figures and are influenced by their community. Despite their circumstances, they are kids who want better, want to break the cycle and be that future leader. My slogan for the upcoming school year is “Taking PRIDE in you”. Each day, my goal is for them to truly believe in themselves and believe they can achieve anything.
My Project
Hi, my name is Jaquez Murphy and I am a mentor coordinator. While completing my duties as an intern, I also have the pleasure of molding our future leader’s minds. My mentoring group is comprised of at-risk African American Males who may have challenges and obstacles to face through no fault of their own. I serve as a mentor, big brother, and also father figure to most of my young men. We discuss life and how to overcome challenges that they face. I always believe “You have the ability to overcome your circumstances, for they do not define you or what you will accomplish. Vow to make each day better than yesterday. Make it a great life or not. The choice is yours.”
At the end of each day, I always tell my young men “if no one has told you today, let me be the first to say that I am proud of you and always will be and I love you.” This statement lets my students know that I am forever with them.
No matter what they go through in life, they can always count on me to be there. With that being said, I want my young men to experience life other than what they know. I would like to take them on a trip to A & T State University in Greensboro, NC. The cost of the trip will be for food and travel expenses. The trip will consist of a full day where my students return home the same night.
At the end of the day, my badge reads Intern, but my mindset and heart says father, big brother, educator and mentor. I greatly appreciate your help and support in molding the future leaders of America. Thank you!
