My Students

Meet the Busy Bee's! Our classroom family is made up of 20 extraordinary 3-5 year olds, and two teachers who love them! To qualify for Head Start, our students must be at or below the federal poverty limit, or have other needs such as homelessness, placement in foster care, etc.

Head Start not only provides education in the academics, but also focuses on teaching children how to manage their own emotions and work with others.

We create a classroom family in which we all work to help each other learn, grow, and stay safe!

Head Start also works with whole family to make sure that they have the resources they need to succeed. We provide opportunities for the parents to be involved in their child's education, as well as providing education for the parents when needed. And as a parent, can't we all use a little help sometimes? Head Start believes that EVERY child can succeed, and we can't wait to help them!

My Project

We are getting ready to do a study of clays and doughs. We will start off playing with our playdough and seeing what we can do with it. The children will take some time to create and explore, and really get used to working with it.

While our project is based on clay, it will tie in other academic areas such as language, math, and science.

Once we have played with commercial playdough, children will get some cooking experience in making their own. We will use our mixing bowls and measuring cups to create our own playdoughs and compare how they are different and the same. Children will have to follow directions using a visual recipe, and will gain experience in measuring and mixing. Once we have made several different types of dough and investigated them, we will move on to commercially made clays.

We intend to use several different types of modeling substances, including plasticine, air dry clays, and oven-bake clays. Students will study the difference in the texture of the clay, as well as how it changes when drying. We will also talk about different techniques we use when working with clay, and create a project with each different type.

Throughout the study children will be using descriptive language to talk about the clays, and learning new vocabulary. They will be measuring ingredients for clay, and comparing different kinds. Students will draw pictures and write about what they are learning. We will have guest artists come in, and children will be preparing questions to ask them, which will teach them interviewing skills. While we are learning about clay, we will also be learning about math, language, and science. We greatly appreciate your help in making our learning hands-on and fun!
