Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students race through the door each morning begging and pleading for a chance to get on the computer. Not having technology at home or even a literate parent to help them read can be a huge disadvantage. I want to find a way to get their hands on technology while also building their love of reading.
These amazing six and seven year olds put a smile on my face everyday.
They are tough, witty, quiet, caring, respectful, and above all else...little sponges soaking up the learning around them. They come from tough backgrounds, homeless situations, and high poverty homes. Our school is very transient but I have been blessed this year with 14 out of 16 students who have been at our school for a year or more. At a school with a strong revolving door, this is amazing. These children work hard daily to make learning gains. I hope I can help break the cycle of this poverty cycle for them and play a part in molding them to be successful citizens. Our school is working on preparing students for life. I tell myself daily... I am making a difference and these kids are going to do something with their lives.
My Project
With these tablets, students will be able to access district programs that are individualized to give them reading instruction based on their needs. Each student can become stronger in the areas of phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. These are the building blocks that will mold them into strong, successful, and passionate readers. Students will be able read books, listen to stories, build words, and for my English language learners, even learn to read, write, and speak in English. These tablets can also allow students to record themselves reading and play it back to see their own reading behaviors. This will make them more aware of their strengths and areas of focus. These tablets can open a whole new level of learning in our classroom. A charging station and cases will allow us to use them throughout the day.
As I tell my students, reading is a gift no one can take away from you.
This is so powerful to children who have no control in their lives or the world around them. I need your help to give these children the most precious gift. They deserve it and they will use it to become strong, successful, and passionate readers. I can make a difference in the lives of these sweet kids. You can too!
