Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am currently a Middle School dean in a high needs area. Many of my students are lacking proper social skills and I have found an inspiring way to reinforce positive behavior. They are fully engaged and motivated throughout their class session because they are trying to acquire points to win rewards.
My students work hard and often support their mothers and fathers by running household errands and watching younger siblings.
Unfortunately, another thing that my students have in common is that their families are struggling financially. Within my school the majority of the students qualify for the state's free or reduced meal program. Due to the budget cuts schools are facing, teachers in my school are no longer able to personally give each student the resources they desire.
My Project
As part of an incentive for our grade, I along with my guidance counselor have created a way to reward good behavior. Students are supplied with a daily conduct sheet that is to be filled out by each of their teachers throughout the day. On the conduct sheet includes information on whether the student arrived to class on time, acted properly during the class session and if they have completed their homework assignments. Each category earns the student a certain amount of points. When they reach the desire number of points they choose a prize of their liking. These prizes include custom t-shirts, sweatshirts and miniature models that I personally create. Due to the economic hardships that so many schools are facing, I am requesting that the silicone to create the miniature custom models for the program be funded. I have been personally funding it myself, but since this competition has been such an overwhelming success the demand for more prizes is increasing weekly.
With your help in supplying these materials my students will be empowered to keep up the good work and achieve socially and academically.
