Our high school is considered 100% poverty level and there is a 100% free or reduced price lunch for students. Most of my students come from broken homes, where supplies and resources are limited. Due to this, I try to provide all supplies to my students in the classroom. They are not required to bring in any supplies except their pencil (and most times even a simple task as this is challenging for them). As a low-income school, it is difficult for us to provide for our students to ensure a excellent education including some resources for our classrooms.
The diversity at our high school is a huge part of who we are.
Students are constantly interacting and meeting individuals from various walks of life (including social backgrounds, cultures, and economic statuses). There are students who live with other family members rather than their parents for various reasons. Some students may have even just arrived from South America and speak barely any English. Some students have wealth and parents that are able to afford anything they want and need. Students walk into our doors and can experience and learn something new from their peers in a matter of seconds.
These supplies can enhance my students' art-making practice on various levels. Each supply will benefit either an intermediate/ advanced level art class that I teach with a specific purpose, which makes it difficult to justify purchasing with the limited budget we are allotted annually.
With these supplies, students will have more options that allow them to portray themselves and their ideas in a more defined and visual way.
For example, the humidifier can help keep clay to the correct moisture necessary for hand-building, allowing for a more advanced level of creating. The heat press can assist with mounting their artwork for a more sophisticated presentation.
These supplies will allow students to modernize their thinking process, and create work at an entirely different level than they would without access to such equipment and materials.
