Modern Scholars in Search of Shakespeare

My students need 30 copies of the graphic novel version of Macbeth so they can "see" the play as we read Shakespeare's words.

My Students

Remember the confusion you faced trying to decipher Shakespeare's "screw your courage to the sticking-place"? His plays are meant to come to life on a stage, so why do we ask students simply to read his words dead on the page? My students need to experience Shakespeare so they can understand him.

Students are reading "good" literature less and less often these days.

Unfortunately, budget cuts have made it impossible for my senior English students to have new textbooks in more than 30 years. Our current book contains Shakespeare's Macbeth, but its worn-out, out-dated appearance is rather off-putting.

My Project

The graphic novel of the drama Macbeth will spice up our study of Elizabethan literature. The comic book-style book contains the original text as written by Shakespeare, so students will still get the authentic experience. The full color images that accompany the text for every scene make the reading experience as close to a "performance" as we can get, which helps students to gain so much in terms of comprehension. When they fully understand, they will be able to take the next steps to making connections, analysis, and beyond!

I want my students to relate to this text and be able to apply its universal themes to the world around them.

With these books, that will happen. They will leave my course thinking Shakespeare is an amazing storyteller instead of "something boring they were supposed to read in high school."
