I teach young adolescents, 13-15 years old, in eighth grade. The middle school's enrollment is about 600 students. We are a low-socioeconomic school. My students come to me with a diversity of backgrounds. My students are merged into our middle school from two smaller elementary schools. My students live in rural communities. Some of my students come from homes that don't have access to the internet. A majority of my students are being raised in single-parent homes or by their grandparents.
My students are enthusiastic about math when they have the opportunity to collaborate with one another and use various forms of learning materials.
I have the opportunity to teach all levels of students within my eighth-grade classes. I begin my day with an upper-level group of students that take high school Algebra in the eighth grade. My second block is a co-taught classroom, where I have 25 students with different needs. Of my 25 students, 21 of them have some type of accommodations that have to be met. My final block class consists of average students that take the required Pre-Algebra class in eighth grade.
My Project
The Scholastic Math Magazine will be an asset to my classroom. Previously, my students received the magazine subscription, but due to funds being cut in our district I was not able to renew it. The magazine provides all levels of math for my students. The magazine provides enrichment for my advanced students too. I will be sharing these magazines with my co-worker so all the 8th graders will benefit from them.
My students will be engaged by learning math through relevant topics.
The world is rapidly changing and today's youth are experiencing things that weren't in my world. The Scholastic Math Magazine will bring our two worlds together. The magazine focuses on the today's issues in the world. Sometimes these issues are ones that are more relevant to the teenagers and not so much to me. The magazine helps bring me up to speed with my students. The magazine provides lesson plans and digital downloads for me to use with them.
