Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a high school, I have the unique opportunity to teach students who are just starting to look towards their own future. To me, this means it is the perfect time to truly introduce the students to the world around them as well as show them career opportunities.
My students are almost, but not quite, adults.
They desperately want to be treated like adults, and many of them act like it, as they have grown up in difficult situations but they are still teenagers. Some of my daily joy is getting them to put aside their home burdens aside so they can focus on growing as a person, and maybe giggle along the way.
My class is filled with brilliant minds who are at a disadvantage for the technology-focused future they have all chosen. I love showing them all the opportunities that exist for them and giving them hope to pursue what they would like.
My Project
Sometimes the most effective way to learn is by being hands-on with a project. However, in the realm of anatomy and physiology, hands-on activities can quite difficult to form as it requires either models to manipulate or animals to dissect. While dissections can be the most exciting, some students have religious, or personal objections to taking part, so I must have some sort of useable alternative for my students.
Skeleton models are accessible, can be manipulated and multiple body systems can be patterned from them.
Smaller skeleton models mean that I can have more models so smaller groups of students or even individual students can learn from the materials. If I am still remote I plan on mailing these out as lab sets to be set from student to student, if I am in person I can have students work in small groups on the models.
Identifying bones and joints, molding and identifying muscle/muscle groups, even creating organs can be done with the use of clay and these models - which makes them multifaceted and perfect for the anatomy and physiology classroom.
