My students come into class everyday knowing that to me, they are all scientists. The concepts and skills that we learn in class are tools to help them to make inquiries about their own world.
My students are so wonderfully curious about their world.
They come into class with lots of great questions and are excited to hear about the new things they will be learning in class. We have a very diverse population. It's diverse in both ethnicity and economic level. This is great because students come in with varying backgrounds that make for great discussions and opportunities for students to learn from and about each other. It can also be difficult sometimes because there are such big differences in the range of students that it's a challenge sometimes to make the content accessible for all students.
My Project
I have such a big range of students, in terms of their learning abilities, in my classroom that I am trying to obtain tools to help students of all levels have better access to the content studied in class. I believe that using models will be beneficial to a large range of students because they are great visual tools. They will allow my low achieving students and my English learning students a chance to visually connect what they are seeing to what they are learning. They will also help my high achieving students because I plan to have them be my experts and use the ear and fetal development models to help their peers understand the content. By teaching another student, they are solidifying their own knowledge of the content.
The ear and fetal development models will really allow students to see how our bodies work in a way that elevates their interest and help them retain content better.
Students are so naturally curious about things that relate to themselves which makes life science such an interesting topic. My hope is that students leave my class with a better understanding of the diversity on our planet and a better appreciation of the world and how our bodies work.
