Luis J. Rodriguez wrote, “Art is the heart's explosion on the world. Music. Dance. Poetry. Art on cars, on walls, on our skins. There is probably no more powerful force for change in this uncertain and crisis-ridden world than young people and their art. It is the consciousness of the world breaking away from the strangle grip of an archaic social order."
My students are a powerful force for change.
They have big dreams! They dream of helping their families, enriching their community and reaching their full potential. With your help, we can acquire the tools and skills to reach those goals. PKHS has a predominate Hispanic population (nearly 80% of the student body). These students need positive role models to inspire and direct their efforts.
The son of Mexican immigrants, Luis J. Rodriguez began writing in his early teens and has won national recognition as a poet, journalist, fiction writer, children's book writer, and critic. Currently working as a peacemaker among gangs on a national and international level, Rodriguez helped create Tia Chucha's Café & Centro Cultural, a multiarts, multimedia cultural center in the Northeast San Fernando Valley.
As a active peacemaker in Los Angeles County,
Luis J. Rodriguez is willing to virtually visit KHS students to discus his book and work in the community. Positive modeling and long term goal planning is the focus of this Unit in my English 9 classes. I would like students to be familiar with his work before meeting him and discussing community building.
