Modeling Creative Thinking in Art With Creative Solutions in Teaching
Help me give my students and my room creative tools to both support excellence during virtual learning and support the changes in our in-person learning to keep environments safe while still being rigorous in Art!
Last year I had stepped out of the professional world of art and business designing to address a real issue that has occurred in learning: The decline of rigorous and relevant visual arts. Art's core is an intentional demonstration of grade-level applications and scaffold skills to higher levels; be a demonstration for the functional, commercial, industrial and emotional capacities of Visual Arts.
I teach in a Title I dual-language school that is over 90% free-meal eligible, which from the outside of these walls, many could find it easy to judge our kids’ capacities based on those statistics… and I am on a mission to prove those judgments wrong.
My Curriculum speaks to CC Cougars that they are creators, they have the freedom to experiment and make mistakes, and we can expressively develop as humans and intentionally grow through art. Many of our students experience real trauma, and I have art therapy techniques woven into learning the foundations of visual arts, and how artists use creation to productively cope within struggles. This year is an unprecedented year with the constraints and complexities of COVID-19, yet a time for young artists to speak their emotions and truths through visual development.
My Project
Visual literacy, creative thinking and constructing innovative solutions is the foundation of the arts and this project is a model of that creative thinking needed when facing challenges whether related to Art or not in overcoming new challenges, like those presented by COVID-19 associated fluctuations in education.
Distance learning has provided challenges for teaching art.
I relate to the students that feel anxiety when forced to sit still all day. Having flex seating will help their instructor, as well as having materials that sanitize and are multi-use will assist in controlling shared materials and COVID-Spread. These supplies have been chosen for their multi-purpose use and ease of cleaning that will aide the significant changes to visual arts instruction this year. My students need to see modeled thinking and real examples they can touch and understand in order to see the power for their thinking to solve problems they have: be-it the math concepts they grapple with or the art project that is new to them or the way to organize their room so they have more space.
