Help me give my students everything they need to create clay replicas of the amphibians they are studying: clay, paint brushes, and the tools to care for them.
Every teacher is born from a dream. We all dream our future lessons, our future classrooms, our future achievements, and more than anything we all dream of our future students. This might be construed as sappy or over-romanticized, but I have the classroom of students that we all dream about. My students come from a high-poverty area. We are a Title I school.
Yet, my students, despite the challenges their life gives them, come in every day ready to learn.
They face the rigor of the coursework with a smile and curiosity. I am filled with sheer wonder at what they can do and how hard they will work to meet the expectations placed on them. We are normal, everyday people who will accomplished the extraordinary with our goals. I am the teacher with the best class. They have learning gaps but they really do work to fill those gaps and achieve. I want to give them the world. I can't, but I can help them see its wonders.
My Project
Over the next few months my students will be studying and becoming experts on an amphibian of Arizona that they selected. This project requires sustained focus on a single topic and expression of understanding through reading, writing, speaking, and art. This project will be strenuous and help them build their reading and writing stamina they need in order to be successful students and adults.
Donating to this project will help young children connect reading, writing, speaking, social studies and science to art.
In order complete the performance task they must conduct research over multiple sources. They will conduct a science talk which informs listeners of the amphibian they studied. Then they must summarize their learning by creating an Arizonian Amphibian Trading card and illustrating the card with a detailed illustration of their amphibian's most interesting adaptation. From this point they will focus their efforts on writing and revising their first multi-paragraph essay.
Upon the conclusion of writing their essay I would love for them to express their learning through clay, working to make a detailed replica that demonstrates the amphibian's shape, size, coloration and adaptations, before they present their final essay to their peers.
