I teach sixth-grade in an elementary school building which can be tough considering sixth-graders are really middle school students!
Even though most of them have gone to this school since they were in kindergarten, all of my students do an awesome job of showing kindness to new students and making sure everyone feels welcome and a part of our school community.
The books in our classroom need to represent the diverse backgrounds of our school community. We need to celebrate our diversity!
My Project
Every summer I scour garage sales and Half-Price Books to fill my classroom library shelves with a variety of books for my students. Unfortunately, many of the books in my classroom were published over ten years ago. My students deserve to read books that have characters from diverse backgrounds, characters that look like them; i.e. like Nisha, from India, in "The Night Diary".
I want to begin a Mock Newbery Book Club in my classroom.
Students will read books that are up for consideration for the Newbery Medal and predict which book title they believe will win the award for 2019. I have also included the Newbery Medal winner for 2018, "Hello Universe", for students to compare with their selection.
