My Students

We are a Title I school. Our students come from diverse backgrounds, and often a low socioeconomic household. According to the National Children's Book and Literacy Alliance, 64 percent of eighth-graders read below grade level. I feel like our students have not been inspired to read outside of the classroom. This is due to a lack of interest in the subject matter of reading materials available to them at school, as well as the lack of access to literature at home.

My Project

Throughout the school year, our campus has been under construction. For this reason, our library has been inaccessible to students. This project will allow students to have access to books that pique students' interest. For example, our students have 25 minutes each day to independently read a novel of their choice. However, many students don't have books to bring from home or their fifth period teacher may not have many novels due to the subject they teach. My solution to this issue is to create a small mobile library with the books in my classroom. I will go around during third period to provide students an opportunity to choose a novel they would enjoy reading. Being able to choose a book that interests them will motivate and encourage further reading, ultimately improving literacy.
