My students have autism and/or intellectual impairments. They are a post-high classroom of a public high school in Michigan. Ages between 18-26 years old, our curriculum focuses on vocational skills, job training, employability, community participation and daily living skills using embedded academics.
My students work very hard to learn key concepts to be effective office maintenance workers and a member of a "crew".
The students learn the difference of clean vs. dirty, open vs. closed, estimations, schedules, time and self-determination.
Self-determination is a huge part of my students life as they mature and have to advocate to get their need and wants met. The students in the mobile cleaning crews have been placed there because they have expressed or shown interest and strengths in the area of housekeeping and maintenance.
My Project
My students practice both vacuuming and floor cleaning as vocational/employment skills and daily living tasks. We practice daily, to master skills for future life and job needs. Independence, consistency and task completion are paramount. The students are responsible for daily vacuuming our Resale Shop, donation processing room, conference room, one classroom and an office. The tile floors must be mopped at least bi-weekly as the traffic and use of the tiled rooms is heavy. The tiled rooms that need to be mopped are a kitchen and lunch room, part of the processing room, a computer/media lab and one classroom.

Maintaining a clean environment is paramount to good health and success. Progress and forward movement in life is a positive step to my students transition to adulthood. I am trying to facilitate self-determination and problem solving for my students to have an independent and self directed life where they get their needs and desire met. Good tools to complete the housekeeping and maintenance of their environment is one step closer to success.
Our classroom is housed in a private non-profit business called Full Circle Upscale Resale. One of our retail training sites are the Full Circle Upscale Resale Shop. We are in need of Commercial grade cleaning tools and machines.
