Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are hardworking and ready to learn. Our K-5 school has a very wide range when it comes to academic levels. Many students read below level. Most of my students are from a home that is considered at or below the poverty level.
My school is one of the highest poverty level schools in my district.
As a dual-language immersion school, we have a very diverse community here. Students will be bilingual and bi-literate by the time they leave elementary school. We are also a designated newcomer school for students who are English language learners. Many languages are spoken at our school.
Our library needs to be an inviting, innovative space to help students become 21st Century learners. We practice and encourage exploration, collaboration, innovation.
My Project
Our library is outdated and lacks the materials to be a 21st Century space. It is small, cramped, and uninviting. A 21st Century library not only is a space to check out books but is a space where students can read together, create, collaborate, and innovate. One of the biggest obstacles my students face is that the shelves in the library are hard for them to reach.
We need a mobile book bin organizer with book bins that will allow younger readers easier access to books that are organized into kid-friendly categories.
This book bin organizer will put books on their eye level and encourage them to check out more books. The bins also allow younger students to see the covers of the books which will get them excited about all the new books in the library. We can also have bins dedicated to our Spanish language books for our dual-language immersion program.
