My students need access to their bilingual books! This cart will allow me to bring our Bilingual Take-Home Library directly to the students. Less interruption to learning; more reading at home!
My elementary-aged students are English Learners in southwest Michigan. They are not only developing their first language at home with their families, but are simultaneously acquiring English and learning IN English while at school. They are fun-loving, determined, and energetic as they work on developing their academic vocabulary and reading comprehension.
My students are the hardest working students in their schools!
As my students progress through elementary school, their classroom teachers and I use a variety of strategies to support their efforts. They need extra think time to translate what they heard and formulate their responses; many visuals and opportunities to practice; and resources and tools that support multi-literacy development.
My Project
Over this school year, my colleagues and I have been building a bilingual library of books for our K-3 English Learners to take home. These books allow more people to read with them at home because they offer two languages -- English and their home language! Students are enjoying reading and having book talks with parents, grandparents, older siblings, and other family members.
This project will make our bilingual library more accessible to all of our K-3 EL students!
There is a Bilingual library at each lower elementary school in our district, but they are housed in my office, which is locked when I am not there. If this project is fully funded, each school will have a Mobile Bilingual Take-Home Library, and the cart can sit outside of my office so that students can access it. It will also be convenient because the cart can be brought to classrooms so there is easy access to checking out bilingual books.
