We are a suburban, neighborhood middle school with over 800 students from diverse backgrounds. Our school has two Physical Education/ Health and Wellness teachers who share the gym with over 60 students participating at a time. Two of our class periods also include an additional 10-12 special needs and physically impaired students, adding an additional dynamic to the atmosphere. Assessing and Evaluating our students' skills and activities can be a real challenge at times.
Our students have built a strong community and they are committed to making it healthy.
Staying strong and healthy can be difficult when you come from a low-income area. Over 50% of our students receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch daily. As a staff we emphasize eating right and maintaining a strong and healthy body and mind. We want our students to be prepared for a world that uses technology in higher education and in the workplace by integrating it into everyday life and activities.
My Project
Today’s sedentary lifestyles are impacting the health and academic performance of students and teachers alike. Increasing low-level activity, such as standing in the classroom engages students with their curriculum and gets them up and moving. In a Physical Education class we have spaces that promote movement to both energize and empower students, as well as encourage collaboration and boost engagement among classmates and educators.
While our students are active 95% of the time they are in Physical Education, we need the ability to get alongside them to assess their performance.
Having the ability to be near a student during teacher or peer assessment with a computer is valuable to input results and notes on the spot. With larger class sizes, it is helpful to break the students into smaller group sizes to assess their activities and have their peers perform their observations and reflections. Having a mobile desk that both the students and teachers are able to use with computers or for writing would help keep all aspects of our class moving.
