My Students
I work in a small rural town in Alabama. We have 90% free and reduced lunch. Our students come from various backgrounds. Some come from low poverty homes. Some may not have access to a diversity of books at home, so the school library is where they have an opportunity to have access to books.
Our library is a very popular location of the school.
Many students, mainly the fifth and sixth graders, visit the library in a day's time. My hope is to raise the reading interest of seventh and eighth graders, while continuing to provide great titles for our active readers with a larger variety of books.
My Project
Throughout the year the MMS National Elementary Honor Society completes community service. Our organization believes in service, scholarship, responsibility, and leadership. At the end of the year, we take our students on a fun trip for doing a great job keeping up their grades and doing so much for the community.
Learning history is so important for children to understand the world today!
This year we would like to include an educational trip that will give our students the opportunity to learn about history. Hopefully, students will apply what they learn to be better persons and share what they learn with others.
Our students will have the opportunity to learn about not only Alabama history but also learn about racial inequalities in other states. Learning about the past will help our students understand the strides others made for us to be here today. Many of our students have not been given the opportunity to visit other places of historical value. Visiting the National Memorial for Peace and Justice gives our students the chance to “see” history and apply what they learn to the present.
