Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend a Title I campus within the Title I district. Many of my students don't have the opportunity to go to Pre-K as our campus does not have a program and they would have to attend one at another campus. These Pre-kindergarten programs are highly sought after and fill quickly.
Many of our students were impacted by Hurricane Harvey this past August/September 2017, making many things at home no longer a top priority.
Our students were out for two weeks while our community tried to recover, then were pulled right back into school as if life were back to normal at home. Some of us are not back in our homes but have been relocated. Our classroom and school routines are the only normalcy we have at the moment; however, my students are amazing, resilient, compassionate, and caring children. Some still lack basic essentials, and their families are too proud to ask for and/or accept help.
We are a blessed classroom and I will do whatever I can for "my kids."
My Project
A small child also has a small belly and often a small attention span. If their tummies are grumbling it is difficult for them to stay focused on what they are learning. For many of our children Kindergarten is the first time they have been on a fairly regimented eating schedule. It takes time to adjust to that schedule and they often get hungry before our lunch time.
A hungry body has a difficult time maintaining the focus necessary to learn what is required of it.
The pretzels, goldfish, fruit snacks, Fruit loops, Cheez its and other healthy snacks will help my students learn to make good choices about what yo snack on. The containers will help them to recognize a healthy portion of snack.
