My students are in a school that is 50% Title I and live in the rural foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Our school encourages our students to be the best they can be. In order for them to do this in science, we need materials for labs to extend their knowledge of our new standards this year.
With the materials for engaging labs all our 7th grade students will be able to explore and understand matter around them.
I want our students to feel confident and be proud of their accomplishments in and out of the classroom. They need to be able to problem solve, work as teams, and believe in their own abilities. Success breeds success in the classroom and in life.
My Project
With new standards this coming year, my students need new lab supplies to identify mixtures and substances. The sand, marbles, metal filings and magnets will allow my students to separate and identify the parts of the mixtures.
Describing in specific detail is an important life skill and will be used in a lab for describing matter by the properties of the rubber band, copper wire, toothpicks, and paper clips.
Students will classify the objects through observing, touching, manipulating, and smelling.
Students will also do multiple labs involving substances. They will practice identifying unknown substances, discover if new substances are formed, and eventually the knowledge of physical and chemical changes.
