Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a large, underprivileged city and underfunded school system. These students are dedicated, determined and they thirst to learn.
I am in awe of the fact that their surroundings and varied hardships do not dim their enthusiasm for education.
One hundred percent of my students receive free lunch.
My students take my class to learn to cook for themselves. We make everything from scratch. They learn how to cost out a recipe, the method to correctly cook and bake that recipe, and then they get to eat their results. They can judge not only how they did with the recipe, but the recipe itself and what they might do to change the outcome.
My students often struggle to verbalize or write about on paper what they think or feel. Some are ELL students learning English. Some have unique learning styles. Our hands-on class allows my students to experience a different approach to learning. For some, Culinary Arts is their motivation for coming to school. They work in groups with people they might not feel initially comfortable with, but they learn to be more comfortable, tolerant and open through their involvement in the creative process itself.
My Project
Standing mixers will help my students get the best results out of their recipes. These mixers will allow my students to work with the proper equipment to finish their projects in the allotted class time.
I want my students to experience working with similar equipment that is found in a restaurant kitchen.
Often at home, they do not have this type of appliance. I want to help my students feel as ready as they can in order to assist them in gaining employment in the restaurant industry.
Using these mixers, my students will be able to master how to cream the butter properly for a cookie dough. They will be able to learn the intricacies of whipping up a meringue. They will be able to create the proper structure for yeast dough. Throughout it all, my students will become proficient in using the machine and all its parts, and how to apply it in each of their recipes.
