I am a mathematics teacher. I also teach a class called Freshman Transition. In the Freshman Transition class my students are researching future careers. I want to do something fun with my students, while also teaching them. My students start every day ready to learn!
My school is a small school nestled in the mountains of beautiful Colorado.
We have about 550 students, including elementary, middle and high school. It is the kind of small community that you see in the movies. Everyone knows everyone. We help each other. The community supports the school in every way. Yet, we are not a rich community, but our parents are hard working people.
My Project
I wanted to work with the art teacher to support our school wide "across the curriculum" movement. I also wanted to let my students learn about art through academics. My geometry students will study tessellations. Then they will create a t-shirt with a painted tessellation that they created. I also would like my Freshman Transition students to create a "tools of the trade" t-shirt representing their career that they chose and have been researching.
I am working with the art teacher to create a unit on each topic, with the final product being a t-shirt painted by the students.
We will then have a day when everyone wears their painted shirt. My students will learn about art, tessellations and careers, while having fun!
