Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
People of all ages are heavily bombarded and influenced by mass media daily. Teenagers are shaping their identities, in part, based on what the media tells them to do, be, and think. The Visual Arts and Integrated Math Classes at our school will be collaborating on a Media investigation unit. Our goal is to bring different students together to share research, findings and reactions to promote media literacy and awareness.
All of our 100 Freshman and Sophomore students will be using statistics gathered in their Math class to make a collaborative analysis and artistic reaction piece about their findings. This will be a partner project in which students will be presenting their research, statistics, graphs and art piece at a public exhibition. Two students are each given an 18 by 18 inch cardboard panel, and they must connect their panels and their research findings to create a visual message. This art piece will be in the form of a movie poster, billboard, or magazine article/advertisement. Each student group will be using drawing, painting and collage to illustrate a message that they come up with based on their media analysis.
This will be a powerful experience for students because they will be forced to look deeply into media messages, portrayal and purpose that influence their daily life. Students will be investigating how people who relate to their "identity," as defined by individual students, are shown or not shown in mass media manipulations. Individual research will then transition into the group investigation. Once students are strategically placed into partner groups, then they will have to share findings and essentially mix the media messages that they have found in a collaborative reaction piece.
The essential elements of this project are very simple. We will need to do lots of scaffolding drills and assignments in drawing, coloring and collaging before we jump into the final project. I am asking for 6 sets of 29 color Sharpie markers and 95 glue sticks. This will build student skills and allow them to create one solid final piece that they will display and describe at a public exhibition.
This project will open the eyes of many students as well as inspire the desire for change. Students are examining their own representations as well as their fellow classmates' in mass media. The collaboration component of this project encourages students to work together to solve problems and promote change in society at large.
