Mixin' It Up in the Kitchen (Part 2)

Help me give my students a KitchenAid stand mixer to help them be more independent in the kitchen.

My Students

I teach young adults, ages eighteen to twenty-two, with a variety of intellectual, physical and sensory impairments in our high school's Transition Program. My students are focusing their time in school on preparing for life after high school. This looks different for every student. We work with each student individually, to help them communicate and work towards their personal goals and visions for their futures.

My students are learning valuable real-life skills, such as cooking and cleaning that are useful both at home and on the job.

My students are looking forward to being as independent as possible after high school. All of my students participate in internships and jobs around our school building and in the community as part of their education.

My Project

My students practice their cooking skills two afternoons a week in our kitchen classroom. Many cooking tasks are difficult because some of the students lack the strength or the motor skills to stir or mix up ingredients.

A stand mixer will allow all students to independently participate in our cooking lessons.

Currently, some students either don’t mix at all or they need staff to help them hand-over-hand. Students take such pride in being able to follow a recipe without help.
