Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are smart, beautiful, enthusiastic first graders. They come from a variety of cultures, races, and socioeconomic levels. Some of their home languages include English, Spanish, Arabic, Amharic, Vietnamese, Cambodian, and more. As a dual language school, all students are learning to read, write, and speak both English and Spanish.
These curious and persevering children are ready to meet any challenges and learn everything possible!
They always want to know more to make the world a better place. Many students come from low-income homes and have not been able to access resources and experiences that other children take for granted. This does not stop their drive!
My Project
Art feeds students’ creativity and imaginations. We are distance learning and students are using their imaginations to express themselves with incredible drawings both on paper and our digital learning platform. Many do not have access to more than either lined notebook paper provided by the school or drawings on the digital platform.
The creativity of first graders is endless and amazing and these materials will allow their imaginations to fly!
Each month students will receive an art kit that will allow them to create masterpieces, from watercolors to scratch stained glass windows to masquerade masks. The monthly kits will connect to what we are learning in class, such as stained glass windows to learning about light. The postcards students create can be shared with family or friends as we learn about geography.
These projects also provide students an opportunity for social emotional learning as students learn about identity, self-expression, and creative ways to express their emotions. We appreciate your support and I can’t wait to see their faces as they receive, create, and share their artwork!
