Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are mostly first generation or new arrivals from the Caribbean and Asia. We are a Title I district and are students live at or below the poverty line. Our ninth grade program just developed an art program last year. These sweet, smart and creative art students are eager to create.
I love that my students come to school every day eager to create even though they deal with incredibly stressful life circumstances such as poverty and hunger.
Students come to school to eat, they get two meals a day from our school, some taking their breakfast and coming to the art room bright and early to eat and work.
My Project
Currently our small art room is bare. It is filled with cast offs from other schools. Regardless of our situation, the students are so eager to embark on their journey to create mixed media masterpieces. My ninth grade artists are so ready to work with true artist materials in their first high school art experience.
My students will be creating mixed media works based on modern and contemporary artist such as Romare Bearden, Picasso and Ray Arcadio.
They will paint, use collage materials and draw creating a symbolized self portrait. For two terms my students have practiced the elements of art to prepare for this artwork.
