My Students
My students are all ELLs. Primarily they are from Uzbekistan and the Dominican Republic. Most of them live in a large urban community complex near by the school and come from working class families.
The majority of our incoming population is from Uzbekistan and this is a tight knit community.
The kids, for the most part, all seem to know each other outside of school as many live in the same apartment building. They are trying hard to succeed in spite of that fact that many only have one working parent.
My Project
My students need magnetic dry erase lapboards for guided reading. They enjoy doing mix it and fix it activities. My students would benefit from being able to more easily show me their work. When I have a larger group it would help me if they could lift their boards so I can do a quick check of their spelling. The magnetic boards will also make it easier for them to rearrange their letters without dropping them as they have been. The magnetic boards will keep students work in place and make it easier for them to see their own mistakes.
The magnetic boards will help them participate in more guided reading activites which has become a big part of the curriculum at our school.
The students really enjoy these small group activities and I want them to get the most they can out of these sessions.
